Andrew Serafini is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on strategic and comprehensive intellectual property counseling and management to biotechnology, biopharmaceutical and other life sciences clients. He assists his clients in obtaining, protecting, and enforcing their intellectual property rights, especially in the areas of immunology, molecular biology, antibody engineering and therapeutics, vaccines, stem cell technologies, molecular genetics, genomics, proteomics and protein chemistry, pharmaceuticals, medical therapeutics, nanotechnology, clean energy, medical diagnostics, and personalized medicine.
Dr. Serafini's practice involves preparing and prosecuting U.S. and international patents; performing due diligence and freedom to operate analyses associated with mergers and acquisitions, venture capital and other private and public financings; drafting opinions on patentability, non-infringement and patent validity; product development counseling; inter partes disputes and post grant proceedings; and supporting technology litigation. He works closely with the venture capital community to help build life sciences start-up companies into industry market leaders. Dr. Serafini also partners with public and private universities and research institutions to help safeguard, leverage and bring to market their technology assets and innovations as well as facilitate the technology transfer of these assets and innovations to foster further developments to benefit the public.
Prior to joining the firm, Dr. Serafini was a partner in the Seattle office of an international law firm where his practice was primarily patent prosecution and counseling.
Dr. Serafini is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law where he teaches advanced courses in intellectual property with a focus on patent law. He also advises and mentors University of Washington School of Law students participating in independent study programs and law clinics, including the University of Washington School of Law Entrepreneurial Law Clinic.
Dr. Serafini is also a director on the Life Science Washington Board (formerly Washington Biotechnology & Biomedical Association and often referred to as WBBA).
Dr. Serafini was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by the WBBA at the 2013 Governor's Life Science Summit and WBBA Annual Meeting. In 2011 and 2013, he was recognized as a Washington "Rising Star" in the area of Intellectual Property by Super Lawyers magazine. Dr. Serafini was recognized as a top patent practitioner in 2015 by IAM Patent 1000 – The World's Leading Patent Practitioners.
