Becky S. James

Becky James focuses her practice on appeals and white collar criminal defense. With over 25 years of experience, Ms. James has handled a wide range of appeals in federal and state courts in complex civil and criminal cases, and she has argued approximately 50 appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the California Courts of Appeal. She also has successfully represented individuals and businesses on significant white collar defense matters including fraud, false statements, public corruption, antitrust, and environmental crimes.

Before joining Greenberg Gross LLP, Ms. James was the founder and owner of a successful appellate boutique, James & Associates. Earlier in her career, she spent more than 12 years as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. During that time, she served as Chief of the Criminal Appeals Section, overseeing the Criminal Division’s approximately 500 appeals per year. She also served as the Chief of the General Crimes Section, training and supervising new attorneys in trial practice. After leaving the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Ms. James was a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips in Los Angeles, where she served as co-chair of the firm’s Appellate Practice Group and was also a member of the firm’s White Collar Criminal Defense and Government Investigations Group.

Ms. James has been a frequent instructor on appellate advocacy and criminal law issues. She taught appellate advocacy as an adjunct professor at Loyola Law School and white-collar crime as an adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School. She also taught courses in trial advocacy and appellate advocacy at the Department of Justice National Advocacy Center and has been an instructor and organizer for the Federal Bar Association’s Ninth Circuit Appellate Practice Workshop.

Ms. James was selected to serve as a Ninth Circuit Lawyer Representative, serving as co-chair of the Central District of California delegation, and was an elected member of the Ninth Circuit Conference Executive Committee. She has also served on the board of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. She has been named a California “Super Lawyer.”
