Brant Maller, of counsel in the firm’s New York office, has broad legal and business experience in investment and finance. His clients have included many of the world’s largest institutional asset managers and investors.
Mr. Maller has a unique understanding of the world’s largest institutional investors (especially pensions, endowments, foundations, insurance companies, and sovereign wealth funds), particularly with respect to how they use alternative investments such as private equity, hedge funds, real estate, and real assets to achieve their investment objectives.
Mr. Maller is Founder and CEO of the Alternative Investments Forum (AIF). AIF is an independent economic think tank focusing on institutional investment policy. Its mission is to foster education, communication, and information exchange among institutional investors globally to help them achieve their investment objectives. Its Board is chaired by Harvard Business School Professor of Investment Banking Josh Lerner and includes many of the world's leading finance academics, investors, and investment consultants. Mr. Maller’s work with AIF involves exchanging best investment ideas and practices with chief investment officers of the world’s largest (billion dollar plus) pools of investable capital and their staffs, consultants, boards, and external asset managers.
Mr. Maller is a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Institute of Public Finance (NIPF) and is the chair of its Investments and Pensions Track. The NIPF is the educational foundation of the National Association of State Treasurers. Mr. Maller is assisting the NIPF, in collaboration with Pepperdine University, to create the nation’s first Certificate in Public Treasury Management program for senior public treasury/finance officials.
Mr. Maller served on the investment committee of New York State Common Retirement Fund (the nation's third largest pension plan with nearly $180 billion in assets (as of 3/31/14). He served on that committee for three years and under two successive New York State Comptrollers and was co-chair of its Policy and Process Committee and chair of its Process Subcommittee, which reported to the New York State Comptroller on strategic planning, manager selection, and best practices.
Mr. Maller also served for nearly four years on the California State Controller’s Advisory Council on Investments, which advised the Controller in his capacity as a member of the Boards of CalPERS and CalSTRS (the nation’s largest and second largest pension plans, respectively), on various investment-related issues.
Mr. Maller received his B.A., cum laude with Distinction, from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978 and an M.C.R.P. from Harvard University and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law in a joint degree program in 1982.
