Brooke W. Quist

Brooke W. Quist, a partner in Steptoe's Century City office, concentrates his practice in the areas of domestic and foreign intellectual property, including patent preparation and prosecution, litigation, preparation of patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions, client counseling, strategic portfolio development, due diligence investigations, and licensing, as well as other transactional intellectual property matters. In this regard, Mr. Quist counsels clients in various aspects of patent law, trademark law, copyright law, and related intellectual property matters.

Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine included Mr. Quist in the 2014 edition of the “IAM Patent 1000.” IAM writes that Mr. Quist is “extremely knowledgeable and effective in dealing with examiners at the patent office, and he produces magnificent results.” The magazine further notes that one of Mr. Quist’s client confided: “He is the best prosecutor of patent applications I have ever seen.”

His counsel to Prime Focus Technologies, formerly DAX, a company that provides a cloud-based TV and film production workflow platform, enabled the company to patent its industry leading product, Digital Dailies, which won an Emmy Award in 2013 in the category of “Outstanding Achievement in Engineering Development.”

Mr. Quist has substantial patent experience that extends to a variety of fields, including: computer systems, including hardware components, software applications, computer networks, operating systems, peripheral devices, user interfaces, embedded systems, and data management systems; e-commerce/Internet related technology; encryption, authentication, identification, and data security systems; information technology applications; telecommunications technology, including satellite systems; film processing and post-processing technology; multimedia collaboration and distribution systems; casino gaming technology; mechanical devices, including sporting equipment and medical instruments; material processing and structures, including semi-conductors, composites, and advanced metallic materials; and business methods.

Prior to practicing law, Mr. Quist was a senior engineer in the Aircraft Division of the Northrop Corporation in Hawthorne, California. As a research and design engineer, Mr. Quist concentrated on developing structural concepts and designs utilizing advanced materials, structures, and forming techniques for both commercial and military applications. He also assisted in programming and implementing variation simulation analysis for computer assisted aircraft production.
