Ambassador Charles T. Manatt, founder and co-chairman of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, passed away on July 22, 2011, at the age of 75. Over a storied 50-year career, Mr. Manatt mastered the business of politics and the politics of business. He was known throughout legal, business, political and civic circles as a visionary leader.
In addition to co-founding the prominent national law firm that bears his name, Mr. Manatt served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 1981 to 1985 and as U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic from 1999 to 2001, as well as on numerous corporate, educational and civic boards. He served as co-chairman of Bill Clinton's presidential campaign in 1992.
