Clyde is a member of Reed Smith’s Energy and Natural Resources Group. Clyde, until recently, was ConocoPhillips’ Deputy General Counsel for Litigation & Arbitration. He joined Phillips Petroleum Company after graduating from New York University, and during his career has held various leadership positions with responsibility for management of the company’s litigation and arbitration and, prior to Phillip’s merger with Conoco, for oversight of major corporate transactions as Associate General Counsel for Finance, Human Resources & Governance. He was responsible for management of all litigation and claims arising out of the 1989 explosion at a Phillips’ chemical complex that resulted in 23 deaths and more than $ 1 billion in property damage and business interruption insurance claims; landmark litigation in England against Enron over a “take or pay” gas contract for the entire output of a North Sea gas field; a substantial and highly contentious claim in China arising out of an oil spill in Bohai Bay; many domestic oil & gas class actions and environmental claims; and ConocoPhillips’ international arbitration proceedings, including its multi-billion dollar expropriation claim against Venezuela. He has sought throughout his career to apply a disciplined, analytical, and pro-active approach to problem solving.
