A native of Baltimore, D. Gill Sperlein graduated magnum cum laude from American University's Washington College of law in 1994.

In the 1990's he associated with noted First Amendment attorney Tom Steel. Mr. Sperlein focused on business zoning and licensing issues.

In 2002, Sperlein became General Counsel to Io Group, Inc. and continues to serve in that capacity, primarily concentrating on anti piracy efforts.

Sperlein has testified before the California legislature on behalf of the adult entertainment industry on issues such as a proposed adult business tax and mandatory condom use in adult film production. He frequently speaks on matters relating to the adult industry and internet based piracy.

Mr. Sperlein is active in a number of professional organizations including the First Amendment Lawyers Association and the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF). He currently serves on the board of directors of the Free Speech Coalition.
