Daniel S. Huffenus is the managing partner of Katten’s Charlotte office and the head of the office’s Real Estate practice. Dan is also a member of the firm’s Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. He is a Registered Foreign Lawyer and a non-practicing partner in Katten Muchin Rosenman UK LLP. Dan has a nationwide, sophisticated commercial real estate finance practice. He represents real estate capital markets lenders in the origination of mortgage loans and is particularly knowledgeable in issues related to lending transactions involving commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS).
Dan is well versed in issues involved in structuring CMBS loans. In addition, he advises servicers of commercial mortgage loans in a variety of areas, with a focus on the defeasance of securitized loans. His recent experience includes the modification and structuring of distressed commercial loans.
He also represents real estate investors and developers in purchasing and selling real estate, forming development entities and negotiating financing documents. Chambers USA notes that Dan is "knowledgeable, thoughtful and negotiates very well. His understanding of real estate law and securitization makes him great with clients."
Before practicing law, Dan worked as a senior consultant at a national real estate practice, where he assisted clients in a wide array of financial issues involving real estate debt and equity investments. After graduating law school, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Justice Stewart G. Pollock of the New Jersey Supreme Court.
