Erin Elisa Goodsell

Erin Goodsell is an associate in Cooley's Litigation department and a member of the firm's Commercial Litigation, Class Action Litigation, Privacy, and Intellectual Property Litigation practice groups. She joined the firm in 2008 and works in the San Diego office.

Ms. Goodsell represents pharmaceutical, healthcare, retail, and technology companies in complex commercial and contractual disputes, consumer, privacy, and securities class actions, corporate governance and shareholder litigation, government investigations, and intellectual property litigation.

Ms. Goodsell has experience in a broad range of substantive legal areas. She has particular expertise in drafting critical motions—such as motions to dismiss, motions to compel arbitration and enforce class action waivers, and oppositions to class certification—giving her clients swift and efficient relief without protracted litigation. She also has practical experience in every stage of a case—from pre-litigation advising and factual investigation through trial and appeal—and has practiced in both state and federal trial and appellate courts, as well as in alternative dispute resolution. Ms. Goodsell has represented both plaintiffs and defendants, and has worked on numerous cutting-edge legal issues, particularly in her representation of internet and social media companies. She also regularly advises clients outside of court on issues including compliance with state and federal privacy law, and drafting and enforcing arbitration provisions. Ms. Goodsell also serves on Cooley's Women's Initiative Committee.

Before joining Cooley, Ms. Goodsell served as a law clerk to the Honorable Judge J. Clifford Wallace, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Ms. Goodsell graduated first in her class and summa cum laude from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, where she was elected to the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barristers. During law school, Ms. Goodsell was a teaching assistant for two courses, Legal Research & Writing and Contracts, and was a fellow at the International Center for Law and Religion Studies. Ms. Goodsell served on the Moot Court Board of Advocates, as a Trial Advocacy Board member, and as a lead articles editor for the BYU Journal of Public Law.

Ms. Goodsell received her BA summa cum laude in History from Georgetown University.
