James W. Hill

James Hill, MD, represents life sciences and medical device companies in patent litigation, prosecution, inter partes review and other post-grant proceedings, licensing, M&A, portfolio management and IP counseling. He advises clients, from startups to corporations and major educational institutions, focused in such areas as pharmaceuticals and biologics, genetic engineering, biomarker discovery, cardiovascular medicine and other technology areas. James also represents makers of software and computer systems. A graduate of University of Southern California School of Medicine, James serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at his alma mater.

In patent infringement litigation, James has served as trial and appellate counsel in successful patent cases related to BRCA1 and BRCA2 breast and ovarian cancer genes, hospital informatics systems, medical imaging, and drugs and biologics therapies in Hatch-Waxman and BPCIA suits. His representation in prosecuting and defending patent infringement suits has also entailed such technologies as MRI diffusion tensor imaging and orthopedic surgical devices.

James provides skilled management of patent portfolios and due diligence counsel for medical technology companies, device makers and research institution connected to their strategic mergers and acquisitions, licensing agreements, investments and financings, which have ranged in value from $2 million up to $1.2 billion.

A co-author of several chapters in a neurosurgical textbook, James received his medical residency training in internal medicine and in diagnostic radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he was awarded a fellowship in neuroradiology. He completed coursework in the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering program at the University of Southern California, with an emphasis in signal and image processing. He has conducted research in several areas: digital radiography, hemoglobin biochemistry, ophthalmology, intraoperative MRI for neurosurgical applications, image fusion techniques for CT, MRI, PET scanning and arteriography, and radiosurgery for malignant brain tumors.

James is recommended in the 2016 edition of The Legal 500 United States in the area of life sciences, and he was named, in 2014 and 2016, a leading patent professional in California by IAM Patent 1000 – The World's Leading Patent Practitioners for both patent litigation and prosecution.
