John N. Mills

John Mills is an associate in the Patent Counseling and Prosecution practice group and a member of the Cooley Litigation department. He joined the Firm in 2005 and is resident in the Reston office.

Mr. Mills's practice focuses on the representation of various clients in connection with strategic patent counseling, prosecution, and litigation.

Mr. Mills's technical experience includes a wide variety of technologies such as power systems (including engines, fuel cells and fuel systems), medical devices (including orthopedic devices, injection devices and laboratory equipment), manufacturing processes, electronic control systems, instrumentation, computer software and the Internet, and consumer products.

Mr. Mills's professional experience includes all aspects of patent procurement, as well counseling on a variety of patent-related matters. These matters include providing strategic advice on the types of patent protection available, providing guidance for developing new products in view of the competitive patent landscape, and transactional support in patent-related matters.

Before joining Cooley Mr. Mills was a product development engineer for Synerject LLC, a fuel systems design and manufacturing company. Prior to his tenure at Synerject, Mr. Mills worked as a development engineer and group leader at Cummins Engine Company. During his engineering career Mr. Mills published multiple journal articles and was awarded four patents.

Mr. Mills received his law degree from the William and Mary School of Law in 2005, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. He received an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1991 and a BS, summa cum laude, from Virginia Tech in 1990.

Mr. Mills is admitted to practice in Virginia and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Mills is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
