John Reese has successfully briefed and argued matters before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the landmark caseShaffer v. Heitner, 433 U.S. 186. John has handled numerous appeals and writs involving substantive issues ranging from antitrust, securities, constitutional law, utilities regulation, franchise matters, contracts, insurance, and taxation to business torts, employment discrimination, admiralty, environmental and product liability. He is a member of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers and the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers.

In addition to his appellate practice, John has taught advanced appellate advocacy at Hastings College of the Law and lectured on appellate advocacy at the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall). He was a member of the Board of Visitors of the Stanford Law School from 1983 through 1986.

John has been with McCutchen - now Bingham McCutchen LLP - since 1965, except for two years on active duty in the U.S. Army, including a year as a military intelligence adviser in Pleiku, Vietnam.
