Jon G. Graves

Jonathan Graves, a partner in the Cooley Litigation department, heads the Intellectual Property Litigation practice in the Reston office. He joined the Firm in 2000.

Mr. Graves' practice is focused on intellectual property litigation, with a particular emphasis on patent litigation.

Mr. Graves has litigated patent infringement cases involving a wide range of technologies, including computer memory modules, speech compression and recognition software, medical devices and procedures, and consumer products. He has also represented high-technology companies in complex copyright, trade secret, trade dress, and contract litigation. Mr. Graves has substantial trial experience, having handled jury trials, bench trials, and evidentiary hearings for preliminary injunction motions, as well as Markman patent claim construction hearings. He has litigated intellectual property cases in courts throughout the country, including in the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern District of Virginia, the District of Delaware, the Southern District of New York, the Northern District of California, and the Eastern District of Texas.

Mr. Graves' practice also encompasses intellectual property licensing and counseling. He frequently advises clients on intellectual property issues, including avoidance of third-party rights, assessment of the scope and value of clients' patent protection, and strategies for generation of revenue through licensing and litigation.

Mr. Graves is a frequent speaker at programs on intellectual property issues, including PLI's Patent Litigation seminar.

Mr. Graves received a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1990 and an AB, cum laude, from Dartmouth College in 1986. Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Graves was an associate and partner with Howrey & Simon in Washington, DC

Mr. Graves is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to the Bars of various United States District Courts throughout the country, and to the Bar of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
