Joon R. Yoon

Joon Yoon focuses on the legal and business issues involving intellectual property. His practice includes litigation, particularly in enforcement of patent rights and defense of patent infringement claims; development and maintenance strategies for IP portfolios as well as market positioning and transactions in which IP issues are of main concern; IP licensing programs, negotiations, and transactions; IP due diligence and evaluations; open source software compliance analysis; and counseling of Korean clients on cross-border legal issues.

Joon has an extensive background in software. Prior to law school, he created various bioinformatics software applications at Argonne National Laboratory that are still being actively used in the industry. In particular, one of his software innovations, the Express Primer Tool for High-Throughput Gene Cloning and Expression, was published in BioTechniques, an international journal of life science methods, and has become a highly standardized approach for the design of primers for high-throughput PCR and other plate-based DNA and RNA assays. Joon also worked at Lucent Technologies, helping the Bell Labs researchers in creating a next generation enterprise call center solution.

Joon currently teaches as an adjunct professor for the Master of Intellectual Property (MIP) program at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where the student body is mainly comprised of in-house IP specialists at major Korean corporations and law firms.
