Joseph J. Ybarra is a founding partner of Huang Ybarra Singer & May LLP. Mr. Ybarra’s practice is focused on complex commercial litigation, with a particular emphasis on representing policyholders in insurance coverage litigation, defending professional malpractice claims, and toxic tort litigation.

Prior to forming Huang Ybarra Singer & May LLP, Mr. Ybarra spent 12 years with the Am Law 100 firm Munger Tolles & Olson LLP in their Los Angeles office, where he became a partner in January 2009. Mr. Ybarra began his legal career serving as a law clerk to the Honorable A. Howard Matz, U.S. District Court Judge, Central District of California.

Mr. Ybarra obtained his J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, where he was a member of the Southern California Law Review and elected to the Order of the Coif. He graduated cum laude from Dartmouth College and obtained a Masters degree in American History from the University of Texas at Austin.

When not representing private sector interests, Mr. Ybarra maintains an active pro bono practice. He recently served as lead trial counsel in a precedent-setting challenge to a gang injunction implemented by the Orange County District Attorneys’ office. Mr. Ybarra’s clients secured a judgment that the injunction violated their procedural due process rights under both the U.S. and California Constitutions. The judgment was affirmed by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in a published, ground-breaking opinion.
