Julia E. Guttman

Julia Guttman defends corporations and corporate officers in white collar criminal investigations and in complex business and regulatory disputes, with a particular emphasis on the defense of lawyers accused of ethical or criminal violations arising from their provision of legal services. Her recent cases have involved a wide range of financial fraud and money laundering allegations, as well as securities fraud, antitrust, insider trading, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Ms. Guttman’s civil practice includes the representation of clients in complex litigation in federal courts, as well as the representation of clients before government agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission. She has litigated civil cases ranging from securities fraud class actions to the availability of insurance coverage for environmental contamination claims.

Ms. Guttman also conducts internal investigations for corporations, including investigations for financial services, technology and manufacturing companies, and she counsels clients on the design of corporate ethics and compliance programs to prevent, detect and deter future misconduct.

Following graduation from law school, Ms. Guttman served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Patricia M. Wald of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Prior to joining Baker Botts, Julia Guttman was a partner at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin, L.L.P., in Washington, DC.
