Dr. Mark Hopkins' practice focuses primarily on preparing and prosecuting patents, both in the United States and internationally, particularly on chemical and biotechnological subject matter. In addition, Dr. Hopkins assists clients with infringement/validity and patentability opinions, freedom-to-operate analyses and due diligence reviews.
Prior to joining Kilpatrick Townsend, Dr. Hopkins was a patent agent at a Chicago, Illinois-based law firm, where he drafted and prosecuted patent applications and provided litigation support. While in law school, he was a judicial extern for the Honorable Robert W. Gettleman, United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, where he provided legal research and assisted in the drafting of judicial opinions.
Before practicing law, Dr. Hopkins was a senior scientist for Indianapolis, Indiana-based Dow AgroSciences, leading projects in the structure-based design of enzyme inhibitors. During this time, he also served as adjunct chemistry faculty at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Previous to joining Dow, Dr. Hopkins was an American Cancer Society postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University, where he designed small molecule inhibitors and elucidated the mechanism of various central nervous system enzymes. He is the author of a number of peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Hopkins is a member of the firm's Pro Bono Committee.
