Matthew Parrott is a seasoned trial lawyer who has taken multiple cases to verdict in both federal and state courts, and before arbitration tribunals convened by the American Arbitration Association (AAA), Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
The head of Katten’s New York Real Estate Litigation practice, Matt regularly represents real estate lenders, developers and banking institutions in some of the largest real estate litigation matters in New York and across the country. Matt also focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation matters involving a wide array of issues, including contract disputes, distressed debt, construction, landlord tenant issues, securities litigation, RICO actions, partnership disputes, mergers and acquisitions, internal investigations, earnout payment disputes, investigating the financial affairs of debtors, and seeking to recover assets through fraudulent transfer actions.
During the course of his career, Matt has acted as lead counsel in cases involving more than $3 billion in secured finance transactions, including disputes regarding Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) foreclosures, intercreditor disputes, lender liability claims, mezzanine financing, loan servicing issues, guaranty enforcement and foreclosures of commercial and residential developments. During the recession from 2008–2011, Matt handled some of the largest failed construction project foreclosures in New York City, including One Madison Park, 47 East 34th Street, 855 Avenue of the Americas and 34 Leonard Street. In addition, Matt routinely acts as counsel in connection with sales and acquisitions of distressed notes and assets, including through UCC foreclosure transactions, restructurings and various other due diligence activities.
In recognition of his extensive experience, Matt has repeatedly been appointed to act as receiver by federal and state courts in matters involving liquidations of corporate entities, administration of insolvent businesses and the management and operation of commercial properties. Matt is also an experienced arbitrator and has repeatedly presided over arbitration matters involving complex securities and contract disputes.
