Matthew G. Jeweler

Matthew Jeweler is counsel in the firm’s Washington, DC office and is a member of the firm’s Litigation and Insurance Recovery and Advisory practice groups. Mr. Jeweler’s practice concentrates on the representation of corporate policyholders in complex insurance coverage disputes. He has represented clients in a broad range of industries, including oil and gas, mining, public utilities, and technology. He has represented policyholders in coverage litigation in federal and state courts, in arbitration, and in negotiations with their insurers.

Some of Mr. Jeweler’s representative engagements include the following:

Representation of a major oil company in coverage litigation in state court in Louisiana relating to coverage under dozens of occurrence-based liability policies for environmental liabilities at one of the largest oil refineries in the United States.
Representation of a major mining and smelting company in coverage litigation in federal court in Washington state relating to coverage for alleged transboundary environmental contamination.
Representation of a financial institution in several litigations in state court in New York brought by a monoline insurer and trustees concerning the issuance of residential mortgage-backed securities.
Representation of a leading technology company in coverage litigation in state court in New York relating to coverage for a massive cyber-attack on the company’s online network.
Representation of a railroad in arbitration relating to coverage for environmental liabilities at sites in Minnesota, Illinois and North Dakota.
Representation of a global law firm in settlement negotiations with its professional liability insurer relating to coverage for underlying legal malpractice claims.

In addition, Mr. Jeweler is active in pro bono matters. He has successfully assisted a musician obtain a preliminary injunction against a municipality in federal court to protect his First Amendment rights, and has assisted in briefing before a federal appellate court and the United States Supreme Court relating to the exercise of First Amendment rights on government property.

After law school, Mr. Jeweler served as a law clerk to the Honorable William D. Quarles, Jr., United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
