Matthew Grumbling holds the title of Lead Patent Counsel in the San Diego office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where he practices in the area of intellectual property law and has over 20 years of experience in various aspects of intellectual property acquisition, licensing, and client counseling. Matt's patent prosecution experience includes drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. His intellectual property counseling experience includes drafting patentability, non-infringement, and validity opinions, conducting freedom-to-operate analyses, and advising clients on patent acquisition and licensing strategy. He also has experience in drafting license agreements.

Prior to joining Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Matt worked as an intellectual property associate in an international general-practice law firm. He also has worked as in-house counsel in the pharmaceutical industry. Prior to graduating from law school, Matt worked for more than eight years as a patent examiner in the United States Patent and Trademark Office in a small-molecule organic-chemistry art unit.
