Melanie Brody is a partner in Mayer Brown’s Washington DC office and a member of the Consumer Financial Services group. She concentrates her practice on federal and state government enforcement matters, primarily for banks, mortgage lenders, auto lenders, credit card issuers, student lenders and other financial service providers. She represents clients in investigations, examinations and enforcement actions by the US Department of Justice, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Reserve Board, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Federal Trade Commission, state banking regulators and state attorneys general.
Melanie assists clients with enforcement, examination and compliance matters involving a variety of issues, including fair lending, fair servicing and unfair, deceptive or abusive acts or practices. She also handles compliance matters involving consumer finance laws, including the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, Fair Housing Act, Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Truth in Lending Act and Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act.
Melanie is ranked among the top national lawyers in Consumer Finance by Chambers USA. She was nationally ranked by Chambers USA in 2013, 2014 and 2015 for Financial Services Regulation: Consumer Finance (Compliance) (Band 2). In 2012, she earned a Band 2 national ranking under Financial Services Regulation: Consumer Finance (Litigation). Chambers USA 2008-2011 ranked Melanie among the top national lawyers practicing in Financial Services Regulation: Consumer Financial Services Regulation.
Melanie is a frequent speaker at conferences sponsored by the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, American Banker’s Association, American Bar Association, America's Community Bankers and other industry-related groups on various consumer finance issues, including fair lending enforcement, litigation and compliance, and compliance with federal and state consumer finance requirements. She also has published articles on a wide range of mortgage banking and consumer finance topics, and is the primary author of Implementation Guide to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act Privacy Requirements published by the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, and is a co-author of the Implementation Guide to PMI Cancellation: Understanding the Homeowners Protection Act of 1998 published by America’s Community Bankers and the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.
