Michael Murray focuses on appellate litigation, complex civil and criminal litigation, and advocacy before federal regulatory agencies. A former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and Ninth Circuit Judge Diarmuid F. O'Scannlain and a former Assistant United States Attorney, he has successfully briefed and argued appeals in the Fourth and Ninth Circuits, prosecuted criminal cases in federal district court, and participated in complex matters before the Supreme Court, other federal appellate courts, federal and state trial courts, and federal administrative agencies.
Michael has been involved in matters relating to constitutional law, statutory interpretation, administrative law, intellectual property, criminal law, securities class actions, toxic tort mass actions, and labor law. Prior to joining Jones Day in 2015, he served as the primary brief writer for a successful en banc petition and en banc merits brief in a software patent case in the Federal Circuit. Michael also has contributed to successful merits briefing in federal appeals involving labor-management disputes, trademark protection, criminal law, and nuclear whistleblowers. In addition, he has drafted comments on regulatory proposals regarding the Dodd-Frank Act, the Medicare Modernization Act, and other federal laws and has helped to craft legal strategy for challenges to federal regulatory action.
Before clerking for Justice Kennedy, Michael served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, where he supervised the preparation of appeals in the Fourth Circuit, briefed and argued appeals in the Fourth Circuit, and prosecuted criminal cases in federal district court.
