Michael Welch

Michael Welch's focus is on internal corporate investigations related to complex litigation, including foreign corruption, antitrust, mass torts, and international and multi-jurisdictional issues.

Michael recently defended a Belgian shipping company accused of multiple violations of the False Claims Act in a two-week jury trial in the Eastern District of Virginia. The case resulted in a significant victory. He also represents multinational companies in internal investigations of possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. In addition, Michael represented a subsidiary of Parker Hannifin Corporation in investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice, the European Commission on Competition, and the competition agencies of Japan, Korea, Brazil, and Australia, regarding alleged bid-rigging, price fixing, and market allocation. He also defended a major Middle Eastern construction company related to civil claims brought under the Antiterrorism Act, RICO, and the Alien Tort Claims Act.

Michael has a strong commitment to pro bono work focused primarily on issues involving children. He was co-lead counsel on a six-day trial successfully representing a maternal grandmother seeking custody of her grandson after the death of her daughter. He also successfully appealed the denial of asylum to a Cameroonian tribal chief beaten and tortured for not supporting the regional government. In recognition, Michael received the 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Michael also serves on the Board of Directors of The Reading Connection, a non-profit that promotes literacy for underserved children.
