Myron G. Sugarman served as a partner in the Cooley Business department from 1977 through 2012. He is now a Senior Counsel to the Firm and continues full-time practice. He is resident in the San Francisco office and is head of the Firm's Estate Planning and Personal Representation practice group.
Mr. Sugarman's experience has involved all areas of federal and local taxation. His fields of emphasis include estate planning, deferred compensation, taxation of non-profit and charitable institutions and family and personal tax planning.
Prior to joining Cooley, he served in the Office of The Judge Advocate General, U.S. Army at the Pentagon from 1968 through 1971.
Mr. Sugarman received his JD in 1967 from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law. He was a member of the Order of the Coif. He was the business editor of the California Law Review from 1966 to 1967. He was admitted to the California bar in 1967. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, receiving his BS with honors in Business Administration (Accounting), in 1964 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma and received the Haskins and Sells Foundation Award for excellence in accounting.
Mr. Sugarman is a former president of the San Francisco Tax Club and a member of the San Francisco Estate Planning Council. He is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and the American Bar Foundation and has been consistently listed in The Best Lawyers in America for more than 25 years and, in the most recent edition, is listed under the Tax, Trusts & Estates and Non-Profit Charities Law categories.
In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Sugarman is a member of the San Francisco Grid Club. He is an Advisory Trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation. He is a former director of the California Alumni Association and is a member of The Order of the Golden Bear and an honorary member of The Big C Society.
