Patricia K. Smoots

Patricia focuses her practice on commercial, bankruptcy and insolvency-related litigation, commercial litigation and financial services litigation and disputes. Her practice also includes healthcare-related litigation. Her clients have included banks and other secured lenders, commercial lessors, insurance companies, energy producers, manufacturers, medical professionals, and a wide variety of commercial corporations and enterprises. In bankruptcy cases, Patricia has represented secured and unsecured creditors, official committees of creditors, bankruptcy trustees and other stakeholders.

Patricia obtained a summary judgment in favor of a bankruptcy trustee in a multimillion dollar administrative expense dispute and effectively defended a creditor accused of causing a debtor’s bankruptcy. Patricia has handled commercial and professional disputes in federal and state courts throughout the United States, and before arbitrators and administrative tribunals. She has appeared for clients in commercial contract disputes, business-related tort actions, and actions relating to alleged fraudulent or other avoidable transfers, breaches of fiduciary duty, tortious interference with contract, noncompetition and privacy agreements and common-law and statutory fraud.

Following law school, Patricia was a law clerk for the Honorable George Unverzagt of the Illinois Appellate Court. She recently completed a term on the Bankruptcy Court Liaison Committee (N.D. Ill.) and serves on the Bankruptcy Court’s Volunteer Attorney Panel (providing pro bono representation for indigent parties).
