Peter H. Walsh is a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration practice group focusing on internal and government investigations, class actions, healthcare, and other complex litigation.
Prior to re-joining Hogan Lovells in 2015, Peter served as Chief of Litigation and Government Investigations and Senior Deputy General Counsel at UnitedHealth Group (UHG), a Fortune 15 international healthcare company, overseeing a team of over 100 attorneys, compliance officers, and staff throughout UHG’s businesses. During his eight-year tenure as a senior executive at UHG, Walsh gained extensive crisis management and healthcare experience, handling the company’s most significant legal matters, including the largest stock-options backdating investigation in U.S. history, numerous government investigations, and hundreds of cases across UHG’s heavily regulated businesses. These cases ranged from regulatory enforcement proceedings and False Claims Act suits to complex securities and healthcare class actions. He has defended the company and senior executives in more than a dozen high-profile congressional investigations and hearings and conducted Foreign Corrupt Practices Act due diligence and training for international acquisitions, including UHG’s acquisition of Brazil’s largest healthcare company. In addition to these responsibilities, Peter also oversaw UHG’s Privacy Office and its Technology & Intellectual Property legal team.
Before his time with UnitedHealth Group, Peter was a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Denver, where he concentrated on economic crime and white collar prosecutions and was a member of the Department of Justice’s Corporate Fraud Unit. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Peter regularly tried cases before juries, argued before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and was involved in a variety of high profile securities, accounting, and economic crimes investigations, including the successful prosecution of Qwest Communications CEO Joe Nacchio. During his tenure with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Peter was awarded several DOJ Special Achievement Awards and was formally recognized for his “outstanding prosecutorial skills” by the FBI.
Throughout his career, Peter has worked closely with numerous federal and state regulators and law enforcement agencies including the DOJ, SEC, FBI, FINRA, HHS-OIG, CMS, FTC, Secret Service, and state Attorneys’ General.
Peter has been active in his community in both Minneapolis and Denver. He is currently a member of the board of The Fund for Legal Aid in Minneapolis and the American Arbitration Association’s Healthcare Dispute Resolution Advisory Council, and previously served six years as a member of the Board of House of Charity, a non-profit providing critical services to the homeless and inner-city poor of Minneapolis. In Colorado, Peter was appointed by both Republican and Democratic Governors to serve as Commissioner of the Colorado State Land Board.
