Ranjini Acharya

Ranjini Acharya, resident in the firm’s Palo Alto office, focuses her practice on intellectual property law. Formerly practicing in Australia, she has experience in IP enforcement and litigation, counseling on intellectual property issues in the transactional context, and trademark prosecution.

IP Enforcement and Litigation: Ms. Acharya has prosecuted and defended clients’ interests in complex IP litigation relating to patent, copyright, trademark, domain name, freedom of information, and e-commerce disputes. Her previous responsibilities have included preparing and responding to letters of demand, drafting motions, drafting briefs in support of motions and other trial documents, arguing on motions relating to returns of subpoena and notices to produce, producing research memoranda, and designing and supervising document review.

IP Transactional: She advised clients on intellectual property issues in cross-border transactions across the Asia-Pacific region and conducted due diligence in relation to major corporate transactions, focusing on intellectual property divestment and acquisition issues. She reviewed IP portfolios of major Australian, American, and Asian companies in relation to proposed corporate takeovers, including auditing and advising on international patent and trademark portfolios. She also negotiated, structured and drafted patent, trademark, and copyright assignment agreements for the transfer or licensing of rights as between related companies, between employers and employees, and as a part of settlement negotiations over disputes relating to the use or infringement of intellectual property rights.

IP Registration and Prosecution: Ms. Acharya provided clearance searches and registrability advice on proposed trademark applications. She also prosecuted trademark applications and oppositions before the Trademarks Office of IP Australia, and managed filings before the United States Patents and Trademarks Office. She managed international trademarks portfolios (encompassing 200 pending and registered trademarks in over 20 countries) for multinational pharmaceutical and telecommunications companies.
