Raymond M. Doss

Raymond counsels clients in the fields of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, flavor development, medical devices, and engine technologies in connection with intellectual property issues. In this context, he works with clients to establish strategies for developing patent portfolios while considering the competitive patent landscape, competitors in the field, collaborations with other entities, and other business considerations. In addition to aiding clients in securing sound and enforceable patent rights, he has experience in drafting freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and patentability opinions.

Raymond also counsels clients in the context of acquisitions by evaluating the intellectual property portfolios of target companies to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for remedying discovered issues and strengthening target portfolios. He has experience in representing and counseling clients in connection with contested cases such as interferences and reexaminations before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, Raymond partners with the Intellectual Property Litigation group to represent clients in patent infringement litigations.

Prior to joining Ropes and Gray in 2006, Raymond obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology where he developed novel DNA-binding compounds that can manipulate gene expression. Such compounds represent a novel drug class capable of addressing an array of genetic disease states. He has authored several papers in many peer-reviewed journals and has given several talks on DNA-binding therapeutics.
