Richard Dietz

Richard Dietz is a judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Before joining the Court, Judge Dietz was a partner and member of the Appellate & Supreme Court team at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP. During his legal career, Dietz argued in the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal and state appellate courts across the country, handling dozens of high-profile appeals ranging from billion-dollar judgments to novel constitutional and statutory claims.

Judge Dietz is a North Carolina Board Certified Specialist in Appellate Practice. He is one of only two judges on the 15-member Court of Appeals who is board certified.

In 2013, Governor Pat McCrory appointed Dietz to a four-year term on the North Carolina Courts Commission, which studies and recommends changes to the State's court system.

Dietz served as Vice Chair of the Appellate Practice Section of the North Carolina Bar Association and currently serves on the Appellate Practice Section Council. He also serves on the North Carolina Bar Association's Appellate Rules Committee, which drafts proposed changes to the State's appellate rules.

Dietz has been listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business for North Carolina General Commercial Litigation and in Business North Carolina magazine's Legal Elite for Litigation. He was recognized in the 2012, 2013, and 2014 editions of North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine as a “Rising Star” in the area of Appellate Law. He was also named one of “40 Leaders Under Forty” in 2014 by the Triad Business Journal. North Carolina Lawyers Weekly named him one of 2015's "Leaders in the Law."
