Robert L. Kovelman

Robert L. Kovelman counsels some of the world’s largest and most innovative gaming technology, multimedia, computer technology, software, medical device and mechanical companies in all aspects of patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret law.

For the last four years, Mr. Kovelman has been listed in the Daily Journal’s “Top 25 Intellectual Property Portfolio Managers and Patent Prosecutors in California” and he is recommended by Intellectual Asset Magazine in its “Patent 1000.” Most notably, his clients’ comment, “[Robert] has the requisite (and all too rare) ability to deal with young and inexperienced scientists and engineers, guiding them and facilitating the development of disciplined IP practices,” and that he “…provides real value to clients." Mr. Kovelman’s scope of services spans prosecution, litigation, and transactional issues.

In disputes, Mr. Kovelman protects his clients’ business interests in a cost-effective and efficient manner. He successfully testifies in court based upon non-infringement, validity, and right-to-use opinions, and represents clients in litigation and, when appropriate, negotiates effective licensing and settlement agreements. Mr. Kovelman also uses Reexaminations before the United States Patent and Trademark Office to invalidate patent claims as they are asserted against his clients.

In addition, Mr. Kovelman helps his clients identify new opportunities by examining their revenue models, and leveraging their intellectual property assets accordingly. He takes a strategic approach to drafting and negotiating technology agreements and licenses, as well as in formulating offensive and defensive strategies relating to his clients’ intellectual property portfolios. His work has resulted in the highly-profitable identification and sale of underutilized patents on numerous occasions, and the licensing of intellectual property to monetize assets while protecting his clients’ best interests.

Mr. Kovelman is a frequent guest lecturer at the University of Southern California where he teaches a graduate course in the Department of Engineering entitled Strategic Management of Technology. He also frequently presents to client groups regarding the fundamentals of intellectual property, explaining how intellectual property is protected and used to provide a competitive business advantage.
