Rodney practices primarily in the areas of business litigation, labor and employment and education law. He has represented businesses and public agencies in litigation, including actions alleging unfair business practices, breach of contract, and various statutory and constitutional violations.
Rodney assists clients throughout the United States in responding to claims in most areas of employment law, including harassment and discrimination; wage and hour claims brought under the Fair Labor Standards Act; the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA); restrictive covenant/ trade secrets; whistleblower matters; and public/governmental agency due process claims.
From 1997 to 2000, Rodney served as General Counsel of the East Side Union High School District (“ESUHSD”)—the largest high school district in Silicon Valley, and advised the East Side VIP Consortium, a joint authority which included ESUHSD and nine Elementary/Middle school districts. In January 2000, Rodney was appointed General Counsel of the Atlanta Public Schools. After establishing the APS legal department as a model department for efficiency and accountability, Rodney joined a national law firm in 2005, where he led the firm’s education law practice. He also led another former law firm to being named Education Law Firm of the Year by US News & World Report. Rodney served on the NSBA's Council of School Lawyers national board (03/07), where he also chaired the In-house/Urban Law committee.
Rodney is rated “AV” Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell and has been listed in "The Best Lawyers in America" since 2007. He was selected as a Georgia Super Lawyer by Super Lawyers magazine, and in 2008, Rodney was selected by The National Journal as one of the “50 Most Influential Minority Attorneys in America.” Rodney is the first and only Georgia lawyer to be elected and serve as the President of the National Bar Association (2008-2009).
