Ryan has significant experience with mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, securities, and general corporate law, especially related to the oil and gas industry. Ryan frequently lectures on topics related to oil and gas industry, and also served as an adjunct professor teaching Energy Law at Duquesne University’s School of Law.

Before joining McGuireWoods, Ryan was a shareholder in the energy practice of a national law firm, where he represented the interests of publicly traded and privately held companies including master limited partnerships, private equity funds and financial institutions involved in mergers and acquisitions, finance, project development and other transactions. He advised them on all aspects of their operations, such as acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, purchase agreements, due diligence, securities compliance and transactional work. He also has served as in-house counsel to two publicly-traded natural gas companies (including the first ever exploration and production master limited partnership), where he advised on a range of issues, including transactions, gas sale and marketing matters, business development, employment matters, litigation and real estate agreements.

Ryan is an advisory board member for Pennsylvania State University’s energy land management program and for the Institute for Energy Law. He also is affiliated with the Marcellus Shale Coalition and with the Energy and Mineral Law Foundation. As an active member of his community, Ryan co-founded and provided legal oversight to Operation Troop Appreciation, a Pittsburgh nonprofit corporation supporting U.S. military personnel overseas.
