Steve Snyder
is a partner in the Intellectual Property group at King & Spalding’s Charlotte, North Carolina office. In 2013 and 2014, he was recognized as an “IP Star” by Managing Intellectual Property. His primary practice is concentrated in patent litigation and counseling in the electrical and mechanical arts. Mr. Snyder has managed all facets of many patent litigations involving complex hardware and software matters ranging from cellular telecommunications to medical device technology. He has extensive experience with patent litigation in the Eastern District of Texas and the Northern District of California. He also assists clients with procurement and reexamination of patents, as well as consulting on patent licensing issues. Prior to joining King & Spalding, Mr. Snyder practiced at the intellectual property law firm of Kenyon & Kenyon. Some representative matters and Mr. Snyder’s responsibilities are as follows:
Rockstar Consortium and Mobilestar Technologies v. ZTE Corp. et al. (E.D. Tex.): Representing ZTE in patent litigation involving multiple patents asserted against Android functionality on various devices. Mr. Snyder has extensive knowledge of the Rockstar portfolio and subsidiaries.
SecureNova v. Nokia Corp. et al. (E.D. Tex.); Mobile Enhancement Solutions v. Nokia Corp. et al. (N.D. Tex.); Super Interconnect v. Nokia Corp. et al. (E.D. Tex.); Penovia v. Nokia Inc. (D. Del.): Managing patent litigations for Nokia Inc. and/or Nokia Corp. involving mobile handset-related hardware, software, and communications.
Product clearance, patent procurement and IP consulting: Providing consultation and services involving patents and other intellectual property to a range of companies, including up-start technology companies in New Jersey and California. Presently advising several clients on responding to settlement demands from various patent licensing entities.
GPNE Corp. v. Nokia Corp. et al. (D. Haw.) transferred to (N.D. Cal.): Represented Nokia Corp. and Nokia Inc. in a patent litigation involving allegations against the GPRS and LTE telecommunication standards. Case was resolved after claim construction ruling.
TR Labs v. EarthLink, Inc. (D. N.J.); GlobeTecTrust v. EarthLink, Inc. (D. Del.); Brilliant Optical Solutions v. EarthLink, Inc. (E.D. Mo.): Managed patent litigations involving fiber optics and other networking functionality such as MPLS for EarthLink, Inc.
Eon Corp. IP Holdings v. T-Mobile, Inc. et al. (E.D. Tex.); Hybrid Audio LLC v. HTC Corp. et al. (E.D. Tex.); Levine v. Casio America, Inc. et al. (E.D. Tex.); MicroUnity Systems Engineering v. Acer Inc. et al. (E.D. Tex.); Nazomi Communications Inc. v. Nokia Corp. et al. (N.D. Cal.). Managed patent litigations for defendants Nokia Inc. and/or Nokia Corp. involving mobile handset related hardware, software, and communications.
Oracle America, Inc. v. Google Inc. (N.D. Cal.): Managed all aspects of litigation through discovery on behalf of Google in a highly publicized patent and copyright lawsuit relating to virtual machine technology brought by Oracle.
ICOMM v. Nokia Inc. (E.D. Tex.): Represented defendant Nokia Inc. in a patent litigation involving turbo codes decoders used for mobile communications. Plaintiff dismissed Nokia with prejudice within two weeks following deposition of sole inventor taken by Mr. Snyder.
Stragent, LLC v. Nokia Inc. et al.; Aloft Media, LLC v. Yahoo! Inc. et al.; Aloft Media LLC v. Microsoft Corp. et al.; Aloft Media, LLC v. Google, Inc. (all E.D. Tex.): Represented Google in multiple patent litigations. Primarily responsible for day-to-day oversight of Stragent, LLC v. Nokia Inc. et al. litigation and provided litigation support on other cases.
Saxon v. Nokia (E.D. Tex. and U.S.I.T.C.): Represented Nokia Inc. and Nokia Corp. in patent litigations in two forums involving hardware and software functionality of mobile handsets including clocking, wireless communications, and interprocessor communications.
In Re Katz (C.D. Cal.); Katz v. Continental Airlines et al. (E.D. Tex.): Represented UPS in a patent litigation involving interactive voice response systems.
Koninklijke Philips Elecs. NV v. Defibtech LLC (W.D. Wash.): Represented Defibtech in a patent litigation involving 17 patents relating to automatic external defibrillators. Reported Markman decisions are available at: Koninklijke Philips Elecs. NV v. Defibtech LLC, 397 F. Supp. 2d (W.D. Wash. 2005); Koninklijke Philips Elecs. NV v. Defibtech LLC, No. C03-1322JLR, 2005 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 39859 (W.D. Wash. December 21, 2005).
Reexamination: Drafted requests for reexamination on behalf of clients as well as reexamination responses related to clients’ patents subject to reexamination.
Prior to returning to law school in 2000, Mr. Snyder was the Chief Technology Officer for an Internet startup in Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to that he managed the information systems of an Anchorage, Alaska insurance adjusting firm. Mr. Snyder possesses extensive knowledge relating to computer and mobile handset hardware and software, as well as wireless and wired network communications protocols.
Mr. Snyder graduated from NYU School of Law, with honors, in 2003. He also received a M.S. (1995) and a B.S. (1993) in engineering from Lehigh University. Mr. Snyder won First Place in the Nathan Burkan Memorial Copyright Writing Competition sponsored by ASCAP and Honorable Mention in the Foley & Lardner National Intellectual Property Writing Competition.
Mr. Snyder is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He is registered to practice law in New York and North Carolina, and admitted to the U.S. District Courts in the Eastern District of New York, Southern District of New York, Eastern District of Texas and Western District of North Carolina. He is also admitted to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
