Stuart Plunkett is a partner in the Antitrust and Competition Practice of Baker Botts’ San Francisco office. Mr. Plunkett has 19 years of experience representing clients in complex antitrust and commercial litigation matters across the country. His clients include companies and individuals in a broad range of industries, including high tech, financial services, energy, and healthcare. Mr. Plunkett regularly speaks and writes on antitrust litigation topics. He served as Chair of the Antitrust Section of the Bar Association of San Francisco and currently serves on the Executive Committee. Mr. Plunkett previously served on the Executive Committee of the Antitrust Section of the California State Bar.
Mr. Plunkett also has significant experience in consumer and financial services class actions, securities fraud litigation, and intellectual property matters, including trademark and trade dress disputes. He has defended numerous public companies and individuals in unfair competition and other class actions. Mr. Plunkett has significant trial experience, including the successful defense of a large telecommunications company before a jury and the successful prosecution of federal constitutional claims at trial on behalf of a large energy company.
Mr. Plunkett has an active pro bono practice. He has been awarded the Wiley W. Manuel Award for Pro Bono Legal Services on three occasions. He successfully defended a municipality at a jury trial against an individual seeking a substantial award for personal injuries, obtained asylum for a client who had been persecuted for his sexual orientation, argued before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in a habeas action, represented a builder of low-income housing in San Francisco, defended a municipality in a free speech case, represented the Brady Center in challenges to state laws seeking to nullify federal firearms regulations, and represented civil rights organizations and same-sex couples in litigation arising out of the same-sex marriage debate in California and Montana.
Mr. Plunkett served on the Board of Directors of the Bar Association of San Francisco, and also on the Board of the Foundation of the Bar Association. He is currently Chair of the Bar Association’s Judiciary Committee. Mr. Plunkett received the Unity Award from the Minority Bar Coalition for his work sponsoring and facilitating scholarships for minority law students.
Mr. Plunkett graduated from the University of Minnesota as a Phi Beta Kappa. During law school, he was elected Editor-in-Chief of the Northwestern University Law Review, and was also elected Order of the Coif. He was a member of the National Moot Court, and received the Arlyn Minor Legal Writing Award.
