Susan Engel

is a partner in Kirkland's Washington office. Her practice focuses on both appellate and trial litigation. Susan has represented clients in federal and state courts in a wide range of substantive areas, including constitutional law, securities law, healthcare law, environmental law, and products liability law. She has litigated appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court, in numerous U.S. Courts of Appeal, as well as in state courts. Prior to joining Kirkland, she served as a law clerk to Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court and Judge Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Susan's successful representations have included: successfully challenging in the U.S. Supreme Court discriminatory state statutes prohibiting the interstate shipment of wine; obtaining dismissal of an antitrust class action on implied immunity grounds; obtaining summary judgment in a RICO class action against a major healthcare provider; defeating class certification in Medicare litigation; and obtaining appellate reversal of the certification of a mass tort class action.
