Theodore F. Roberts

Ted Roberts’ practice centers on the defense of clients involved in toxic tort litigation. Since 1994, he has defended manufacturers, distributors and contractors involved in industry-wide litigation on local, regional and national levels. He has first chair trial experience in state and federal courts. Mr. Roberts has tried to verdict, as lead counsel or co-counsel, fifteen cases involving claims of occupational cancer, lung disease and death. His cases routinely involve complex medical and scientific issues relating to causation. To this end, Mr. Roberts has developed, defended and examined expert witnesses from a wide variety of medical and scientific disciplines. Mr. Roberts practice is currently focused on the defense of claims involving occupational and para-occupational exposure to asbestos. He also has defended cases involving mold, electromagnetic fields, trichloroethylene, methyl tertiary butyl ether, talc, vinyl chloride, noise, legionella and others.

Significant Matters

Presently defending contractor in more than 30,000 asbestos-related personal injury and wrongful death cases filed in the State of Maryland.


Presently opposing, on behalf of lead defendant, a plaintiff motion for a mass consolidated trial of more than 13,000 asbestos cases in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.


In 2011, tried to verdict a four case lung cancer consolidation in Baltimore City. Although the verdicts were adverse, more than half the judgments were vacated by a successful appeal in The Wallace & Gale Asbestos Settlement Trust v. Carter, No. 2018 (Md. App. May 2, 2013).


In 2012, secured summary judgment for contractor in mesothelioma case involving Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point Shipyard.


In 2012, secured favorable appellate ruling which upheld trial court grant of summary judgment to contractor in four mesothelioma cases based on final judgment rule. See Brannan v. The Wallace & Gale Asbestos Settlement Trust, 208 Md. App. 164 (2012).
