Tom Hackney is a commercial litigator with substantial experience representing clients in trial courts and arbitration. He has represented financial institutions, industrial manufacturers, energy systems providers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and real estate corporations in a variety of civil litigations. He also has represented companies and individuals facing criminal and regulatory enforcement actions and has assisted in several internal investigations on behalf of corporate boards and senior management.
Tom currently represents Woodward, Inc., an energy and aerospace systems manufacturer, in a previously sealed "whistleblower" qui tam action alleging violations of the federal False Claims Act. Recently, he was part of a Jones Day team representing R.J. Reynolds in a nationwide arbitration regarding contract disputes arising under the groundbreaking Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. As part of this effort, Tom acted as trial counsel in arbitration trials before a panel of three retired federal judges. The Jones Day team handled nine trials and achieved a significant recovery for the client.
Tom also maintains an active pro bono practice. He represented a religious school in a multiweek trial involving various constitutional and religious discrimination claims related to zoning decisions made by a suburban city. Tom also has successfully represented several clients seeking asylum in the United States and teaches in the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago's Lawyers in the Classroom program.
