Thomas M. Newman

Trial attorney Thomas M. Newman has extensive experience in federal civil and criminal cases involving tax, healthcare fraud, bank and wire fraud, identity theft, bankruptcy fraud, and other financial crimes. Tom recently completed nearly a decade of service as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of California. During his tenure, he served as the stolen identity tax-refund coordinator for the Northern District of California and reviewed all tax-related matters involving identity theft.

For his effectiveness prosecuting tax crimes and defending civil cases, Tom earned the U.S. Attorney’s Robert D. Ward award as the outstanding AUSA. Tom’s experience includes filing complaints, reviewing search warrants, conducting evidentiary hearings, and filing civil and criminal motions. Tom has handled a wide range of tax cases, including estate, partnership, individual, and corporate tax matters.

Tax controversies, including trials in U.S. Tax Court, are an area in which Tom has significant experience. Tom has tried case in federal District Court, U.S. Bankruptcy Court and the U.S. Tax Court. Aside from working as an Assistant United States Attorney, Tom was also an attorney in the IRS Office of Chief Counsel and formerly served as a trial attorney in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. While at the DOJ, he was involved with matters and issues related to foreclosures, judgments, tax refunds, summons enforcement proceedings and injunction actions filed against tax-shelter promoters and return preparers.

Tom was a clerk in the New Jersey Tax Court for Judge Harold A. Kuskin. Tom applies his career-long knowledge of the IRS, tax controversies and financial crimes to defend and advise clients, including individuals and corporations, facing high-stakes, white-collar investigations and claims as well in tax disputes.
