Thomas W. Cushing concentrates his practice in defending a variety of tort and contract related matters. He has extensive experience in representing clients in the automotive and railroad industries. His practice includes products liability, commercial litigation, personal injury as well as insurance coverage and indemnity. He is an experienced trial attorney in both federal and state courts and has tried a significant number of cases to verdict in nearly 30 years of litigation practice.
Mr. Cushing has also argued numerous appeals before the Illinois Appellate Courts and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and has filed briefs with the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. Cushing is a member of the trial bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, is admitted in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois and certified by the United States Supreme Court, the Illinois Supreme Court and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Cushing has spoken before professional audiences on trial techniques, the Railway Labor Act, and corporate liability issues.
Mr. Cushing is a former President of the Trial Lawyers Club of Chicago and has been a member of the faculty for the Federal Trial Bar Training Course.
Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner at Baker & McKenzie, Senior Trial Counsel at the Union Pacific Railroad and Of Counsel at Greenberg Traurig and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.
Mr. Cushing graduated cum laude from the University of Notre Dame Law School. While a law student at Notre Dame, Mr. Cushing was awarded the American Jurisprudence Award for Contracts and served as a Note Editor on the Notre Dame Law Review. He received his undergraduate business degree from Notre Dame and was a walk-on quarterback on the Notre Dame football team.
Mr. Cushing is also active in the community. He currently serves as President of the Board of Education for Lyons Township High School. He served as President of the Notre Dame Law Association, served on the Notre Dame Club of Chicago Board, was President of the St. Francis Xavier School Board and served as Chairman of the St. Francis Xavier Parish Council.
Mr. Cushing is a founding member of the Legacy Guild, a charity created in 2012 that provides college scholarships to local children who have lost a parent. Mr. Cushing also served as President of the LaGrange Little League and has coached more than twenty youth baseball, basketball, cross country and track teams. He received the YMCA Vision Award in 2012 for his community contributions and leadership.
