Thomas W. Hyland

Tom Hyland is a prominent litigator who heads a highly successful practice focused on the defense of professional liability matters. His approach has evolved to keep pace with the greater specialization in such cases, and he has built a framework that enables the attorneys in his practice to select from hundreds of expert consultants for assistance in defending clients. Many of his hand-picked litigators have diverse professional backgrounds, such as accountants, architects, engineers, or insurance and financial services professionals, making them uniquely qualified to represent individuals in these fields. Tom lectures extensively throughout the country on professional liability and other topics, and he has taught courses at the University of Houston Law Center, Hunter College and the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.

Tom was named a fellow of the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers in 2005, recognizing his many years of experience in complex litigation. In addition to being a leader of the trial bar, Tom serves as the firm’s general counsel. Tom is also a member of the firm’s Senior Trial Group, an assignment that speaks volumes about the high regard in which is held and the trust placed in him by his colleagues. Prior to joining the firm in 1977, Tom was an Assistant District Attorney in the New York District Attorney’s Office, where he obtained convictions in eight murder trials. After earning his master’s degree, Tom became Special Trial Counsel for the SEC in New York, where he co-authored the definitive report on the financial collapse of the City of New York. Tom attained the rank of Captain while serving in the U.S. Army and earned ten decorations for service before his military career ended when he was wounded.
