Scott Petty
is a partner with the Intellectual Property Practice Group in King & Spalding’s Atlanta Office. He is a registered Patent Attorney who practices in the areas of patent, trademark and copyright prosecution and counseling, licensing and litigation.
Mr. Petty has obtained or assisted in the procurement and management of hundreds of U.S. and foreign patents, the majority of which are in the computer software, Internet and communication technologies fields and the financial services industry. He works on behalf of a variety of financial services companies to successfully obtain patent protection for financial services and products, as well as on-line business processes and information technologies, in the banking, insurance and real estate industries. He supports patentability searching, patent application preparation and prosecution, patent portfolio management, and patent assertion and licensing for several Fortune 500 companies. He has assisted numerous acquisitions and divestitures involving due diligence for intellectual property assets and information technologies, including open source-licensed software and significant patent and trademark portfolios.
Background
Mr. Petty is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Master of Science in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He worked as a Research Engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), where he developed wireless communications systems for defense electronics applications. While at GTRI, he attended the part-time studies program of Georgia State University College of Law and earned his law degree. He served as an editorial member of the Georgia State University Law Review. Prior to joining King & Spalding, Mr. Petty was a partner with the intellectual property boutique firm of Jones & Askew LLP in Atlanta.
Mr. Petty is a frequent author and lecturer on intellectual property law issues, including patent protection for software, business processes and financial products. He served as the author of the monthly "InternetInfo.Column," published in Intellectual Property Today, a national magazine for the legal community, over an eight-year span. He also contributed chapters covering Internet trademark issues in past editions of the annual Wiley Intellectual Property Law Update treatise. He sponsors a monthly Entrepreneurship Forum for the southeastern technology community on behalf of the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Mr. Petty is a member of the Board for the Georgia State University Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Visitors for the Georgia State University College of Law and a former Trustee of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association.
