Winstol D. 'Winn' Carter is a senior trial partner in Morgan Lewis's Litigation Practice. Mr. Carter focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation and arbitration, including patent litigation matters. He has 30 years of experience trying a wide variety of commercial cases in federal and state courts and before arbitration panels. He has tried nearly 100 cases to verdict and has litigated literally thousands of disputes.
Mr. Carter has represented a wide variety of corporations and individuals in the aviation, energy, health, and telecommunications industries. He has handled cases involving patent infringement, disputes in the energy industry, trade secrets, shareholder disputes, air carrier disasters, products liability, and general commercial disputes. He also has handled patent litigation involving computer software and hardware, telecommunications, wireless technology, medical device and life sciences, and energy-related technology.
Mr. Carter is the former chair of the ABA's Aviation Committee and former vice-chair of its Intellectual Property Committee. He is also a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
He has written numerous articles on litigation topics, most recently, as coauthor of Inside the Minds: Patent Litigation & Dispute Resolution—Leading Lawyers on Understanding Key Components of a Case, Evaluating Settlement Opportunities, and Preparing for Trial.
Mr. Carter's civic involvement includes the Houston Ballet, Habitat for Humanity, the Jimmy Carter Work Project, and the Greater Houston Partnership.
Mr. Carter is admitted to practice in Texas and Louisiana and before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Southern, and Western Districts of Texas; the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Louisiana; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is also board certified in civil trial law and personal injury trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
